Letter from Leipzig

September 11, 2005

Dear Brothers in Christ,

This letter is to confirm details of our invitation to Joel Muller to assist us in an intern / co-worker arrangement in the church work in Leipzig Germany. The church of Christ began meeting in Leipzig in November 2002. Attendance at our Sunday assembly has been between 15 and 21 people over the past 3 months.

We met Joel nearly two years ago and he is acquainted with our work in Leipzig and has visited and helped us on a number of occasions when he previously lived in Germany. We have asked Joel to assist us in ministry work here for an initial period of approximately the next 4-6 months. His work will include spearheading follow up with previous church related contacts, one-on-one bible studies, participation in weekly group bible studies and assisting by speaking and leading in our Sunday assembly. Additionally, Joel will be asked and expected to carry out various service projects in the community such as volunteering at Ronald McDonald House, work with group foster homes, civic youth projects, and various and on-going ministry related service to the church and church families in Leipzig.

Over the past three summers we have conducted campaigns to teach English using the bible. These campaigns have been coordinated with the “Let’s Start Talking” organization in Ft. Worth Texas and have been very successful in surfacing contact to approximately 20+ people each year. Of these contacts about 50% continue in an ongoing relationship with church members. Approximately 50% of these contacts go on to develop deeper spiritual interests and begin to seek biblical truths in their lives. One of Joel’s assignments will be to take the lead in following up with previous LST and church contacts.

Joel and I have agreed to meet a minimum of twice weekly, outside of assembly times, for prayer and accountability sessions. We both agree that this will assist us in setting goals and following up on contacts and various ministry efforts. My expectation is that Joel’s ministry work load would be 32 - 45 hours per week at a minimum. I plan to ask him to keep a detailed journal of his ministry related time and activities.

Joel was previously employed as a teacher of English in Germany. Currently, I am not aware of opportunities in Leipzig which would allow Joel to support himself in this fashion. He will, therefore, require financial resources in place to cover housing, food, public transportation and travel expenses to and from Canada. Additionally, for him to be effective in his work here it is very important for him to have on-going internet and phone access to communicate with contacts, coordinate work with me, and communicate with supporters in Canada.

We believe Joel can and will be an asset to the work of the kingdom in our city. We would sincerely appreciate your prayerful consideration to assisting Joel in his effort to work with the church here in Leipzig. Should you have any questions regarding the on-going work here or the work in which Joel will be involved, please do not hesitate to contact me. Additionally, feel free to contact the missions committee or elders at our overseeing congregation, the Antioch church of Christ, in Nashville Tennessee should you have questions about the work in Leipzig.

Yours in Christ,

Dwane Perry
